Siemiraddzki Painting Auctioned for Hospice
A bidding war erupted this week at Bonham’s in New York over a rare painting by Polish
artist Henryk Siemiraddzki. The painting which is titled The Patrician Siesta was expected to bring in about $100,000 but instead
brought in more than $1 million. This is a good thing, since proceeds of the sale of this painting will benefit the Contra Costa
Hospice of Concord, California.
Recent Auction of Titanic Mailbag
Over 1500 lives were lost when the Titanic sunk in the Atlantic Ocean in 1912 and the last living survivor of that disaster is Millvina Dean who is ninety seven years old. According to documents and news accounts, as an infant, she was lifted into a lifeboat in a canvas mailbag, which later was used to carry her family’s belongings back to Southhampton. That same bag along with other memorabilia from that tragic day was recently sold at auction by Henry Aldridge & Son to help raise money to pay for her nursing home.
